तुलसी विवाह

Tulsi Vivah

In 25 days

The ceremonial wedding of the Tulsi plant to Lord Vishnu as Shaligram, which opens the wedding season.

About Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah is done on Kartika Shukla Dwadashi, the day after Dev Uthani Ekadashi, or on any day up to Kartika Purnima. Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep on Dev Uthani, and his first rite is the marriage to Tulsi.

Families decorate the Tulsi plant as a bride and perform a full wedding ceremony with a Shaligram stone or a Krishna idol. Hindu weddings traditionally resume after this day.

How to celebrate

  1. Clean the Tulsi plant and build a small mandap of sugarcane around it.

  2. Dress the Tulsi in a red chunri with bangles and sindoor.

  3. Place the Shaligram or a Krishna idol beside it and perform the pheras.

  4. Offer sweets, fruits and amla, sing wedding songs and distribute prasad.

The story

Vrinda, the devoted wife of the demon Jalandhar, was turned into the Tulsi plant. Vishnu blessed her that he would marry her as Shaligram, and that no worship of his would be complete without Tulsi leaves.
