Lohri
The Punjabi winter festival on the eve of Makar Sankranti, celebrated around a bonfire with songs and dance.
About Lohri
Lohri is celebrated on the night before Makar Sankranti, as the coldest days of winter end and the rabi harvest of sugarcane and wheat ripens. It is the biggest winter festival of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Delhi.
Families and neighbours gather around a bonfire after sunset, throw til, rewri, gajak, peanuts and popcorn into the fire, and sing folk songs like Sunder Mundriye. The first Lohri of a newborn or a newly married couple is celebrated with special joy.
How to celebrate
Light the bonfire after sunset in the courtyard or an open space.
Walk around the fire and offer til, rewri, peanuts and popcorn to it.
Sing Lohri songs and dance bhangra and gidda.
Share sarson da saag, makki di roti, gajak and rewri.
The story
Many Lohri songs remember Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi hero of Akbar's time who rescued girls being sold and arranged their marriages, giving them dowry himself.
