About Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and is the new year in Maharashtra and Goa. It marks the start of the new Samvat year.

Every home raises a gudi at the window or door: a bamboo pole with silk cloth, neem and mango leaves, a garland of sugar crystals and an upturned copper kalash.

How to celebrate

Clean the house and draw rangoli at the entrance.
Raise the gudi in the morning, on the right side of the main door.
Eat a paste of neem leaves and jaggery, for both the bitter and sweet of the year.
Prepare puran poli and shrikhand.
